Synopsis
When a successful television writer's daughter becomes the interest of an aging filmmaker with an appalling past, he becomes worried about how to handle the situation.

The film of the year.*
*The year is 2017, so this is definitely not a compliment.

Louis CK says the N-word in the first ten minutes and it somehow only gets worse from there.

I do feel a little bit bad "defending" this film (even though having a positive opinion on something controversial shouldn't really constitute a defense), but just know that I appreciate this solitary film, and obviously(!) not the revelations related to Louie's behavior. His actions are repulsive, but I'm not going to pretend to dislike what I believe to be a socially evaluative and even politically relevant work of art merely due to the singular conduct of the director. Dozens and dozens of other people worked their ass off on this film.
"she's not a Spring Breaker"
A massively misunderstood & scathing criticism of its self-loathing creator. The alternate title of this incredibly uncomfortable social commentary should be I Hate Myself: Louis Szekely.

gonna let smarter writers take this one on as it seems designed to explicitly and cynically provoke terrible op-eds, raising all kinds of politically charged ideas about powerful industry men and their historically troubling relationships with women yet it is so ultimately vague about it and spends so much time shrugging and self-deprecating it's nearly apolitical. the comedy is tired and the characters are mostly used as mouthpieces to spout takes on all spectrums of the argument, suggesting an oversimplified "it's... complicated", which, no shit, that really the only stance you wanna take here? when it's not fumbling this subject it insists on bringing up it's also largely boring and not much more than self-indulgent pastiche. this is the same guy behind Horace and Pete?
update Nov. 9th: ... yikes.

Not as cringe-inducing as I anticipated, or at least not for the expected reasons, I Love You, Daddy is a curio and a mediocrity. It's definitely not some sort of masterwork being consigned to the bowels of history because of the transgressions of its maker. This is, of course, both a relief and a disappointment. No one wants to waste their time watching a below-average movie, but I'm also personally glad not to feel honor-bound as a critic to defend I Love You, Daddy in the face of Louis C.K.'s indefensible behavior. Should C.K. ever be rehabilitated in the public's view, this film will wend its way to the bargain bin, where it will be right at home.
Especially…

“I don’t know.”
“That’s the only honest response.”Difficult to view objectively at all at this point, but CK’s melting pot of various fantasies (all revolving around his fictional soon-to-be-eighteen daughter) plays like pure panic on various levels (panic for losing her purity / panic for getting old and losing creativity / meta panic re: CK’s personal life) while lushly confronting one of his idols, both on an aesthetic and moral level. We can’t really dissect this one with clear eyes now, but in ten years, it’s going to be a true artifact of an industry in crisis, where one of its most prominent players is essentially wrestling with his own soul while inadvertently penning a disclosure of guilt.

kinda feel really bad about digging this one. the 4.5/5 rating is for the film, NOT for louie’s behavior. i will not defend the film because it is impossible to change some people’s minds, but i will love it. gotta check out horace and pete.
can’t believe i got through every 2017 film i wanted to see before the year ended. woah.
